Our History

McCloud was originally a company lumber town and has a fascinating history. Much of the charm from those days carries through to the present as the entire downtown area of McCloud is a Nationally Registered Historic District, with seventeen buildings designated as landmarks.

Weather & Climate

With an alpine climate, pure water and exceptional air quality, the town of McCloud enjoys four distinct seasons and a variety of weather. The region experiences warm summer days with average temperatures in the high 70-80’s F, with no humidity, and evening temperatures in the 50’s. Winter lows can be in the 20’s F. McCloud receives precipitation primarily from October through mid-May. 

Location

McCloud is located in the southeastern corner of Siskiyou County, which is located in inland Northern California, adjacent to the Oregon border. Mt. Shasta towers to the north of town. McCloud is located off highway 89, just 12 miles east of the Interstate 5. The nearest large cities are Redding, California (about 53 miles to the south) and Medford, Oregon (about 87 miles to the north). 

Local Government

McCloud is a unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) in Siskiyou County, California.  The McCloud Community Services District (MCSD) provides McCloud with municipal services, including water and sewer management, alley maintenance, refuse collection, park and recreation management, fire and ambulance services, and library management. The county seat of Siskiyou County is in Yreka.

There are so many organizations in McCloud that provide entertainment, friendship, spiritual growth, and an opportunity to support the town. The town also sponsors several festivals and events each year. Find out more about where you can find friendship or support a cause.

Schools

McCloud provides a K-8 elementary school and a 9-12 high school. Both schools are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Secondary education is available at College of the Siskiyous, just 30 minutes away. 

Wellness

The McCloud Clinic services include primary care, behavioral health, chiropractic care, massage therapy, podiatry, diabetes treatment, and referrals for specialist care. Dignity Health Center in Mt. Shasta (12 miles from McCloud) is a full service hospital, offering emergency services, cancer care, family birthing center, heart care, imaging and orthopedics, among others. Memberships are available at the Coyote Street Gym in McCloud to work on fitness goals.
